The Return: Integration After a 5-MeO-DMT Experience
by Anonymous Member
A 5-MeO-DMT experience and the 18-month integration process that followed.
I want to write about the return, not the experience, because I think the return is what matters and what people do not talk about enough. The experience was 5-MeO-DMT, inhaled, in a ceremonial setting. It lasted 20 minutes. It was the most intense thing that has ever happened to me. I died. I mean that literally — the self died, completely, and what was left was a void that was also a fullness, an absence that was also a presence, and it was the most real thing I have ever encountered. I do not have words for it. I do not need words for it. It is enough to say it happened.
What I want to write about is the 18 months after. The first 3 months were hard. I was not depressed — I was disoriented. The self that died came back, but it came back different — thinner, more transparent, less convincing. I could see through it. This was not always comfortable. I had a life built around a self that no longer felt solid. I had a job, relationships, habits — all designed for a self that now felt like a costume.
Integration took 18 months. It involved therapy, meditation, time in nature, and a lot of patience. I did not try to get the old self back. I tried to let the new configuration settle. It has settled, now, into something I can live with — a self that is real enough to function but transparent enough to remember what is behind it. I do not recommend 5-MeO-DMT. It is not a recreational substance. It is an ending and a beginning, and you should only do it if you are willing to spend a year and a half learning to live in the aftermath.
